A 49-YEAR-OLD local man was assaulted by a gang of six or seven men in an incident in Batley.
The incident took place as the 49-year old was walking on Upper Road near the car park close to Trinity Church and Trinity Street.
The assault left the victim with grazing and bruising to his head and body. The attackers then fled in an unknown direction.
All the attackers were described as of Asian ethnicity and being in their 20s. One was said to be distinctively smaller than the others, all of them were wearing hoods, hats and scarves covering the lower half of their faces.
Police are treating the attack which took place between 9:10pm and 9:15pm on February 2 as racially motivated.
PC Chris Merrick of the Batley NPT, said: “Incidents of this nature are thankfully very rare in Batley and it is fortunate the victim was not more seriously injured in this cowardly attack.
“We have been conducting enquiries including checking local businesses for CCTV and would ask for anyone who may have footage of the incident on one of their cameras or who can help us identify these men to come forwards.
“Information can be passed to myself, PC Chris Merrick at the Batley NPT on 101, or CrimeStoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.”
