The summer transfer window has seen some clubs already splash the cash and Liverpool were no different, signalling their intent with a £20 million bid for Jordan Henderson, since then Liverpool have been linked with every man and his dog from the Mersey to the Amazon.
But a pattern has emerged to the players being linked with Liverpool, a worrying one from fans point of view. The majority of players being linked with the Reds are central midfielders.
Having already signed Jordan Henderson, who you guessed it… plays centre midfield, although he can play wide right and did start his career there. Liverpool have supposedly been in the window for Charlie Adam, you guessed it a central midfielder.
More worrying news though is the players outgoing and although rumours are usually to be taken with a pinch of salt, Raul Miereles is being linked with a move away, as is Maxi Rodriguez. Two stand out performers from last season.
The one central midfielder who I would urge Liverpool to look at is Javi Martinez. The Spain international is so assured on the ball, can pass it and most importantly he is capable of anchoring the midfield as he is an defensive midfielder. But for that to happen Liverpool would have to part with some serious cash and this may not be a luxury Liverpool can afford in this transfer window.
The area where Liverpool badly need some TLC is not central midfield. They already have Gerrard, Lucas, Miereles, Rodriguez, Henderson, Shelvey and Spearing. The area that Liverpool need to improve is the wings. They desperately lack a left back. Fabio Aurelio is always injured and young Jack Flanagan is still learning his trade.
It seems as if the Reds are going to miss out on Gael Clichy as he looks to finalise a deal with Man City, who they had been heavily linked to a few weeks ago. Another left back being linked is Emilio Izaguirre the Honduran ply’s his trade for Celtic. The other player that is being linked is Jose Enrique, who would be a better option as he already has experience in the Premier League with current club Newcastle.
Liverpool also need to look further up the pitch. Andy Carroll needs service from the wings and Liverpool simply do not have that currently. Juan Manuel Mata would be a very good addition; he is quick, agile, and strong and has a great final ball on him. He can beat his man and get the ball into the box.
But rumours are going around that Liverpool are preparing a £20 million bid for England international Stewart Downing. This would be a good addition, but unlike Mata, Downing lacks the ability to really take on the opposition full back and beat him for pace.
Similarly Liverpool need to look at the other flank, they have already been linked with James Milner and Aaron Lennon. Either of these two would be good additions but I think Milner would be a better bet. As scintillating as Lennon can be when on song, he is too hit and miss. Milner is more consistent and has a better football brain and can be an asset making late runs into the box.
Liverpool may have gone quiet on the transfer front lately following the capture of Henderson, but there has been a lot of movement in the backroom staff this week. Kevin Keen has effectively replaced Sammy Lee and Liverpool have hired their first ever operations director in Andrew Parkinson.
Whoever Liverpool sign on or off the pitch they have a manager in Kenny Dalglish who everyone connected with the club is united behind and this hasn’t been the case for a while.
