Conservative Councillor Salim Patel managed to retain his Dewsbury South Seat at the local election on 5th May 2011. Councillor Patel will continue to represent Dewsbury South on Kirklees council after managing to beat off stiff competition from Labour Candidate Naheed Arshad-Mather.
Patel got 2577 votes with Arshad-Mather coming second with 1896 votes. The run up to polling day had seen the gloves come off with Councillor Patel’s camp which included Independent Councillor Khizar Iqbal accusing Ms Arshard-Mather of being a career politician, after it had been revealed that she had put her name forward as a PPC for the Leicester South by-election, whilst Ms Arshad-Mather accused Councillor Patel of hiding behind Councillor Iqbal.
In Dewsbury East Eric Firth held for Labour with a huge margin. There was more good news for Labour in Dewsbury as they gained Dewsbury West from the Liberal Democrats, as Darren O’Donovan ousted Naz Hussian, reflecting the national picture for the Lib Dems.
